Trust wins national finance award

26 Jan 2017

North Staffordshire Combined Healthcare’s finance team has been nationally recognised for its excellence after winning a prestigious award.

The team beat three other shortlisted NHS organisations to scoop the Costing Award at the Healthcare Finance Management Association’s (HFMA) annual awards.

The award recognises advances in NHS costing processes that lead to better information for organisations when making decisions about how services are delivered.

The finance team is one of only a handful of mental health trusts to pioneer the development and implementation of the new patient-level information and costing system (PLICS) ahead of it being rolled out nationally next year. PLICS gives NHS trusts a better understanding of their finances by providing them with individual costings for each patient.

Suzanne Robinson, Director of Finance and Performance, said: “We are absolutely thrilled to have been chosen as a winner at this year’s HFMA Awards. We were up against tough competition, so to have been selected is a real honour.

“This prestigious award recognises both the innovation and hard work of our finance team, which has led from the front in the development of new ways of working to benefit all NHS providers.

“We exist in challenging times for the NHS from a financial perspective and by using patient-level costing data more effectively we can better understand our services. This new system will help highlight the changes in our services that are required to unlock value for money. It also helps our clinical colleagues by engaging them in a currency they can relate to – their patients.”

The HFMA’s awards programme recognises the work of finance teams and individuals from across the UK, showcasing best practice and achievement in financial management and governance.
