One of the most enjoyable parts of my job is welcoming new starters as part of their Corporate Induction session and last week was my latest opportunity to do so. It’s a great opportunity to welcome people to the Trust, explain all about what we do and how we do it and discuss the journey we're on towards outstanding. It struck me this week just how much our story has changed not just over the time I’ve been Chief Executive, but over my entire time with Combined in the services we deliver, and the confidence we have in ourselves and our future.

We’re in an exciting time for our organisation and it’s great to be able to welcome new people to Combined. As many of you will know, we’re in the middle of a recruitment drive to attract more people to the Trust. As part of this, we’re producing radio and video advertising featuring our own people talking about why they joined the Trust. There’s nothing more powerful or encouraging than hearing from a real frontline member of staff or senior manager.

North Staffordshire and Stoke-on-Trent multispecialty community provider (MCP) vision gathers pace

Regular readers of my blog will know the enormous amount of effort and energy that we’ve put in over the recent past to developing our vision for healthcare across North Staffordshire and Stoke-on-Trent. Last week, we took a significant step forward with the latest meeting of the Alliance Board, which unanimously agreed the first locality that will begin to bring forward the new ways of working, which will be in Newcastle under Lyme.  We’re looking to go live with the new locality from this September. What this means is that we will now start planning to align our teams with other multi-disciplinary teams. There is great work going on in Newcastle led by Dr Emma Sutton, a GP who is also working with Dr Mark Williams for us.

There’s a palpable sense of momentum growing around our plans and I’m delighted that as part of the preparations for the MCP, we will be supported by the NHS Chief Transformation Officer, Helen Bevan and her Horizons team – working with the Staffordshire Sustainability and Transformation Plan (STP) system leadership organisations development team – to design and deliver an Accelerated Design event.

Thanks to the Darwin Centre for welcome on our assurance visit

I was very pleased to lead an assurance visit to the Darwin Centre, with our Chairman David Rogers, a peer ward manager, service user representative and our governance team. The purpose of the visit is to see assurance that we continue to provide high quality care aligned with the CQC domains. The visits are unannounced so, when the visit takes place staff have not done any planning – this will be exactly the same in the new CQC inspection regime. Thank you to the team for making us feel so welcome. 

Ward 4 one-stop recruitment event

Thank you to those who supported the one-stop recruitment event held for Ward 4 at Harplands on Saturday. As previously mentioned, the ward has now been permanently commissioned as a shared care service with University Hospitals of North Midlands NHS Trust (UHNM), providing 15 beds for patients with dementia and physical health needs. It's important that we ensure Ward 4, alongside our other inpatient wards, is fully staffed.

The event formed part of our wider Discover Your Future recruitment campaign for registered mental health nurses (RNMHs), registered learning disability nurses (RNLDs) and registered adult nurses (RNAs). We are holding events throughout the summer, with the next one taking place on Friday 7 July from 3-7pm. Those applying have the opportunity to apply for available posts on the day, be interviewed by a panel and potentially leave with a job offer.
